My husband and I along with another couple flew from California to spend an entire week visiting the Ironbridge area. While there, we stayed at the Lodge at Marnwood. It was fabulous!Mary Doll
We wanted to stay in a vacation rental (aka self-catering) so that we had flexibility – we didn’t want the B&B breakfast regiment – and we wanted some place where we could feel at home and relax in the evenings after a full day of sightseeing. We also wanted to be out of the hubbub of the main tourist area of Ironbridge, and Marnwood is a short 2 minute drive (or 15 minute brisk walk) from the Bridge itself. Marnwood fit all of our requirements and exceeded our expectations.
The cottage was renovated from an old building on the property, and the owner/hostess, Jenny, and her family did an outstanding job. The cottage has heated floors, and the baths have European-style bath/shower combinations. The two en-suite bedrooms gave each couple privacy, and the kitchen was well-equipped. It was a luxury to get up and eat breakfast any time we wanted to. There is even a washer/dryer available, perfect for us as we were staying a whole week and we were traveling light.
When we arrived, the Lodge was immaculately clean, and our hostess had already stocked the refrigerator with eggs, milk, bread and a bottle of wine. The Lodge is located right next to the road leading into the Ironbridge area, but the traffic is such that it never bothered us. The Marnwood property where the Lodge is located is beautiful, a working farm, and there were horses and sheep and fields of buttercups. There is an outdoor sitting area in back of the Lodge, but unfortunately we were never able to use it as the weather didn’t cooperate.
Staying an entire week afforded us the time to see 9 out of the 10 Ironbridge museums, visit Attingham Park and Wenlock Priory, and take a ride on the Severn Valley Railway. As visiting Americans, we were looking for something with English charm but also with a few creature-comforts and conveniences. Marnwood was perfect for us, and, again, exceeded our expectations. We would happily go back there again if we ever have the opportunity.
